Curious Playground
3-4-5 June 2021 — 7.30pm
Kala Sangam, Bradford
Curious Playground is a technological interactive performance taking you, the audience, on an immersive, poetic, playful adventure — a chance to experience storytelling through a sensory world.
The 60 minutes long show includes a trio, duet and solo (20 mins each), offering different aesthetics and physical energies.
The set works as an interactive installation which the audience can access after performance - an invitation to play and be creative. The set uses lighting and sensors to react to its surroundings, lighting up when it detects noise, vibration or touch. Two screens display live generative animation which can be interacted with by the dancers and audience.
Curated by Artistic Director Gianluca Vincentini, Curious Playground has been co-created with choreographers Jamaal Burkmar, Annie Hanauer and Amy Voris joined by visual artist Jake Dubber, artist and set designer Aimee Grundell and artist and designer Oli Bentley.
With costumes by Melissa Parry, the audience finds themselves enveloped by walls of music and sound by Otis Jones.
Created with performers Alex Gosmore, Charlie Hogan, Imogen Wright, Iolanda Portogallo, Maya Carroll and Naomi Chockler, Curious Playground offers the potential for audience engagement in a safe manner.
This event will take place following social distancing requirements in place at the time. In accordance with the current government Covid restrictions, we will be collecting contact details for all ticket holders (you will be asked for these when you make your booking, but we will be checking them on the night). You will also be able to check in with the NHS Track and Trace app.
Please note: You may book up to 4 tickets from a single household (or support bubble) per order. If you wish to book tickets for more than 4 people and/or for multiple households, please make separate bookings.

Kala Sangam’s events are Pay What You Decide, which means you don’t have to pay until after you have seen the event. Pay What You Decide not only allows you to pay what you can afford, rather than a fixed ticket price, but also removes the financial risk of buying a ticket for an event in advance without knowing whether you are going to enjoy it or not.

Online Company Classes
Join us for some FEEL-GOOD movement!
As Mobius Dance returns to the studio to rehearse for its new performance ‘Curious Playground’ we are inviting dancers of all abilities to join us for a series of virtual Open Classes. The classes are for students, professionals, teachers, movers and curious people.
All levels welcomed
Small spaces & furniture friendly
Open to interpretation & imagination
Read a little about the classes below, they all sound like a much needed treat during 'these times'.
- W/c 15th Feb: Annie Hanauer
The class will bounce between improvising with different energies & scores, and a sprinkling of set material. We will invite curiosity & kindness into the spaces you have to enable new interpretations of weight, and articulation through your body and imagination.
-W/c 22nd Feb: Jennifer-Lynn Crawford
All parts of these classes are open to interpretation, improvisation and general imagination and will offer some ways to address the complexity of moving in ‘these times’, in whichever hybrid space you happen to occupy.
Based on self-identified difficulty with accessing movement imperatives like presence, connection and flow through a screen, we will invite some of those ingredients to land in different or new relationship. This will include landmarking our immediate space, furniture, parts of our body, skin, mask/face and screen-comfort.
-W/c 1st and 8th March: Amy Voris
Each session will begin with a brief introduction to the day's anatomical theme (including looking at imagery), followed by experiential explorations and gentle prompts for improvisation.
The last section of the session will be accompanied by sound and offer space for integration of your movement and ideas. The overall intention is to cultivate and allow time for initiation and quality of movement as well as an imaginative pleasure in dancing.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Government announcements, we have taken the decision with a heavy heart to cancel the performance of 'Vibrant Matter & Within Each-Other' on Saturday 21 March 2020 at Leeds City College.
The safety and wellbeing of Möbius Dance staff, audiences and artists is of paramount importance and we take this responsibility very seriously.
The staff and artists we work with are vital to the work we do; without them we would simply not exist. The cancellation of our activities will impact not only our audience but also our committed and talented workforce.
We are heavily reliant on the income which we derive through ticket purchases. We will be in contact with all ticket buyers in due course to provide a credit note or refund. Where possible, we ask that you consider donating the value of your tickets to Möbius Dance to allow us to pay some of the costs already incurred by our staff and performers.
You can keep up to date on our future programme via social media and our website.
We thank you for your continued support, it is invaluable during these uncertain times.

Jennifer-Lynn Crawford
Monday 24, Tuesday 25 & Wednesday 26 February 2020
09:00 – 10:30, Yorkshire Dance, Leeds
- CLASS
Class is based on a strong belief that dancing is enjoyable and physical and intelligent in equal measures. Emphasis is placed on patterns as sensory and tactile, giving different angles and insight into individual possibility and preferences. These patterns are a means to an end - helping us find useful information with our bodies, not to remember ‘steps’ or co- ordinations, but to find connections that can sustain us as we dance. Sometimes class starts from the ground, supporting organisation and clarity through developmental and evolutionary movement patterns. Sometimes class grows out of relational play with others or the space we share. End sequences are offered as templates for individual play and experimentation. Improvisation is always welcome.

Monday 2 & Friday 6 March 2020
09:00 – 10:30 Kala Sangam, Bradford
- CLASS
Vanessa's teaching is grounded in curiosity about how the body transforms as a result of imagination, active shifts of perception, attentional dynamics and a clear relational engagement with others and the environment, whilst finding clarity and playfulness in our awareness of the physiology and physics in motion. These dynamic classes will begin with guided explorations and suggested movement pathways that will support us to explore: center to periphery and periphery to center; nurturing our capacity to guide our inner flows of energy; the under-curves and over-curves of our swinging and spiralling movement; multidirectionality; listening to our fluid weight. As we access our full multidirectional dancing body we'll be encouraged to remain curious and attentive to our individual discoveries. We will also nurture our playful and relational selves by relating and responding to others around us.
- BIO
Vanessa is a dance artist from Sicily based in Leeds. She explores the crossover between choreography, walking-art and installation through site-specific, improvisation, participatory and cross-disciplinary practice. Susanna Recchia
Monday 9 & Tuesday 10 March 2020
09:00 – 10:30 Kala Sangam, Bradford
- CLASS
The main ingredients of the class will be experiential anatomy and improvisation as practices that support technical awareness and creative growth as a mover and as a dancer. We will work on the floor and through space, alone and in relation to others. We will focus on the inner anatomical landscape as a source of sensual information and poetic inspiration as well as inhabit space through travelling and whole-body dancing. Attention and perception will enable the study of the relation between sensation and form and will support choice making and expressive qualities of moving. As a facilitator, I offer deep respect for different forms of expression, love for playfulness and flow, the joy of being in the studio moving with others and deep interest for movement as a research practice.
- BIO
Susanna is an Italian dance artist living in the UK since 2001. She studied dance at the National Academy of Dance in Rome, and is a Graduate of Laban, where she received the Award of Best Performer in 2004. Following a Foundation Course in Dance Movement Therapy at Goldsmiths University, she obtained an MA in Dance and Somatic Well-being at Lancashire University.
Her ongoing practice is fed by Body & Earth, a yearly meeting led by Andrea Olsen and Caryn McHose.
Her work shifts between performing, teaching, mentoring and researching in academic and artistic contexts. As a performer Susanna has toured internationally, and collaborated with choreographers who involve improvisation either in the process of making or in performance and has devised her own work joining practitioners from disciplines, such as photography and film. Susanna is currently the Research and Rehearsal Director of Candoco Dance Company, and has worked with the company in different capacities since 2008: as a company teacher, dancer and Candoco Artist co-leading educational and performative events.
